What is body fat percentage?
Body fat percentage is the share of your body weight that is fat. It tells you more than the scale alone because it separates fat from muscle and water – which is exactly what makes progress visible.
| Category | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Essential fat | 2–5% | 10–13% |
| Athletic | 6–13% | 14–20% |
| Fit | 14–17% | 21–24% |
| Average | 18–24% | 25–31% |
| Elevated | 25%+ | 32%+ |
Orientation values – they vary by source, age, sex and method and are not a medical diagnosis.
FFMI – how much muscle is there?
The Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI) relates your fat-free mass to your height – like BMI, but without the fat. It says more about your muscularity than BMI, which does not separate fat and muscle.
How we estimate the FFMI
Your estimated body fat percentage gives your fat mass. Subtract it from your weight and you get the fat-free mass (FFM). We then compute the FFMI like BMI – just with fat-free mass instead of total weight:
| Meaning | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Low | below 18 | below 15 |
| Average | 18–20 | 15–17 |
| Above average | 20–22 | 17–19 |
| Very good | 22–24 | 19–21 |
| Top (near natural limit) | 24–26 | 21–22 |
Orientation values. The naturally achievable FFMI (without aids) is roughly around 25 (men) and 22 (women). Not a medical diagnosis.
How do you measure body fat?
Every method has its strengths. For everyday use, what matters most is measuring regularly under similar conditions – then the trend is meaningful.
| Method | Accuracy | Effort | Everyday |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photo estimate (app) | estimate | very low | very high |
| Caliper (skinfold) | medium, with practice | low | medium |
| BIA scale | fluctuates (hydration) | low | high |
| DEXA scan | very high (reference) | high (appointment/cost) | low |
Body Fat Scanner takes the photo route: no device, anytime – ideal for tracking the trend. For a one-off reference measurement, DEXA remains the gold standard.
